Pets For Seniors
The Dona Ana County Humane Society offers vouchers for senior citizens who wish to adopt a pet from the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV).
The vouchers come with the added incentive of free dog training and a bigger discount on senior dog adoptions.
The Pets for Seniors Program helps pay the fees to the ASCMV for seniors age 60 and older who adopt a companion dog or cat, including pre-adoption veterinary exam, age-appropriate vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgery. There is no income limit to qualify.
The voucher is worth $25 off of the ASCMV's adoption fee, which is $25 for dogs & cats. ASCMV pets are all microchipped, in addition to their vaccines and spay/neuter surgery.
There is an additional $25 discount for seniors who choose to adopt a senior dog (age 5 or older.)
We also offer free training for any dog adopted through Pets for Seniors that is experiencing behavioral issues.
The Pets for Seniors Program is administered by the Dona Ana County Humane Society.
The most serious disease for older people is not cancer or heart disease - it's loneliness. Pets offer affection, unconditional love, fight loneliness and can help ease the loss of a loved one.
To apply for a voucher, download the application below, or you can go directly to the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley, 3551 Bataan Memorial West, and fill out the application there.
Please note that the application asks for details about pets you have owned in the past and what happened to them. We reserve the right to reject applications based on those answers. We want to place shelter pets in forever homes where they will be humanely treated. We do not give vouchers to people who plan to chain their dogs or plan to dock their ears or tails, nor do we give vouchers to people who plan to declaw their adopted cat.
